The vibrant design of L’Oréal Australia’s flagship training academy appeals to millennials.

Melbourne-based Technē Architecture + Interior Design revitalized L’Oréal Australia’s flagship training academy in Sydney with a design aimed at attracting millennials. The completed academy is part of a new wave of training and education facilities that blend improved amenity and design-led, vibrant interiors to appeal to students, enhance learning and support culture and brand identity.

“We have created a unique, contemporary training facility that responds to the complex needs of L’Oréal and its students,”  said Technē senior associate and project leader Gabriella Gulacsi. “Each element has been designed for longevity and to ensure that fundamental design principles such as placemaking and user experience are met to ensure students remain engaged throughout their training.”

Describe work-space types.

There are five flexible/multi-purpose training rooms. Smaller break out areas have been introduced into the circulation spaces allowing for moments of pause and quiet. A booth seat tucked into the end of the corridor allows for space and quiet away from the training areas, and main meet-and-greet space.

What is the projects location and proximity to public transportation and/or other amenities?

The training academy is serviced very well by public transport. Options include bus services on Harris Street with the bus stop at the building, as well as the light rail–the closest stop of which is at John Street Square.

Were there any special or unusual construction materials or techniques employed in the project?

We designed a custom light fitting in the arrival space; a series of pendant lights that took design cues from the forms and structures seem in hair pins and clasps.

What major furniture products were used?

We used the Radice Stools by Mattiazzi and the Ace Dining Chairs by Normann Copenhagen in the meet-and-greet area. There were custom tabletops on the tables, with standard café bases. The training chairs and tables were client supplied.

What kind of branding elements were incorporated into the design?

L’Oréal Professional Products is the brand identity upon arrival. The training academy accommodates six of L’Oréal Professional Product’s brands, therefore the space is brand neutral. Digital media enables the space to be tailored as required by each brand.

What is the most unique feature of the new space?

The space planning of the academy provides an arrival space that acts as a training registration point, breakout area and ante space for events. We wanted to create a warm and approachable environment which contains elements of a slightly residential and hospitality feel alike. Its sizable counter, with stone bench tops and a mirror above, almost mimics a sleek kitchen in a residential home. The feature of the space is the large scale custom light fitting; a series of pendant lights that took design cues from the forms and structures seem in hair pins and clasps. The journey to the flexible training rooms comprises contiguous spaces for quiet moments, informal meetings and collaboration.

Are there any furnishings or spaces specifically included to promote wellness/wellbeing?
