Chair of the Month

Brian David Johnson, author and Chief Futurist at Intel Corporation, will be in New York on May 16 to keynote WORKTECH, a leading international conference series on the future of work and the workplace. It will be the second time he presents at WORKTECH, having spoken at their London event last November.

His role at Intel is to develop an actionable vision for computing in 2020. His work is called “future casting” – using ethnographic field studies, technology research, trend data, and even science fiction to provide Intel with a pragmatic vision of consumers and computing.

Along with reinventing TV, Johnson has been pioneering development in artificial intelligence, robotics, and using science fiction as a design tool. He speaks and writes extensively about future technologies in articles and scientific papers as well as science fiction short stories and novels.

In short, you don’t want to miss him.

“The future is manufactured every day by the actions of people all over the world. We [must] all become active participants in the future. We must ask ourselves what kind of world do we want to live and work in? As we look out to the year 2020, how will technological innovation and global trends shape our lives?”

The event in NY – which is open to anyone interested in attending – also will include keynotes from the following speakers:

  • Sherry Turkle – Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT and — ¨author of Alone Together: Why we Expect More from Technology and Less from Each — ¨Other
  • Franklin Becker – Professor, Cornell University
  • Nigel Cameron – President of the Center for Policy on Emerging Technologies
  • Ellen Sander – Architect
  • Philip Ross – Futurologist and CEO of the Cordless Group — ¨“Convergence of pre-eminent thinkers in all aspects of work …. cutting edge, resonant & thought provoking.” That’s what one of the delegates from last year’s WORKTECH New York said about the event.

The first WORKTECH conference was produced in London in 2004, in collaboration with the Royal College of Art. Since then, successful WORKTECHs have been held in Amsterdam, Manchester, Melbourne, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Singapore. WORKTECH New York is being organized by UNWIRED.
