Gone are the days of dark cubicles and huge corner offices. Instead, new furniture solutions like Kimball’s Xsede are beginning to dominate the workplace. The open-bench plan is customizable, enabling users to work individually, in small teams, or collaborate in a large group, depending on the table configuration and partitions they choose. Not only does Xsede offer a “build your own office” solution, the bench plan features useful design elements like the “tech tray”, a groove in the center of the table to plug in and stow wires, or the “accessory rail”, which supplies a discreet storage area. Xsede is sleek, professional, adaptable, and an excellent response to the changing office. We talked to a rep at Kimball for more scoop.

How will the product impact the workplace?

As workspace design increasingly becomes less about saving space and more about offering meaningful space, we noticed a shift in space planning from a structured grid to an eclectic collection of spaces serving different functions. Xsede is capable of being configured in a wide range of applications, allowing for the ability to create a diverse open plan with one open plan solution.

How does the product contribute to “new ways of working”?

We noticed that the agile workforce was allowing people to work in ways they were not capable of before. No longer are we tied to desks or having to be hardwired in to be connected. Because of this, people are able to be more selective on their working environment. Xsede’s flexibly in application helps our clients create multiple types of workstations to accommodate all of their employees work style preferences.

What do you think our readers will love about the product?

I think that readers will love how Xsede offers a hybrid open plan solution between a panel system and a bench. The market continues to move away from panel systems, but some are not quite ready for the extreme openness of a bench. Xsede offers the perfect medium by allowing you to separate space when and how you like.
